Our Puppies
Explanation of coat variations
Black Vortex Poodles & Crosses, breeds toy and miniature Poodles and Poodle Crosses. Please note that these colour variations, are seen right across the entire range of sizes in Poodles from the tiniest Toys to the largest Standards.
We mostly breed for mixed - or unusual - colours in our puppies although we do have solid colours most of the time.
(This includes "Parti", "Phantom", "Tuxedo", "Brindle" and "Abstract" colours.)
"Parti's" come in a variety of two-tone colours including Black & White, Red & White, Brown & White, Apricot & White, etc. They are
very distinct in their appearance compared with solid
colour poodles. The colour is predominantly white and
the secondary colour is patches of black, red, etc.
"Tuxedo's" are also two-tone like Parti's except that generally the majority of the top of the body is black, brown, etc. and the belly and the feet/legs is white. The white may
extend to the muzzle, or a ring around the collar in white, white tips on
the tail, etc.
"Abstracts" are two-tone colours where the predominant colour is black, red, brown, etc. and the secondary colour is white. The white will be substantial. ie: More than just a white mismark on the chest, etc.
"Phantom's" are much different than parti colored Poodles, even though both parti and phantoms have a mixture of 2 colors. This term only refers to Poodles that have specific
markings on a solidbackground. The solid will usually be:
-
Black, cream, apricot, red, white, silver or brown
These dogs are broken down into more detailed groups:
-
Black phantoms - black & apricot, black & red, black & cream,
black & gray, black & brown or black & silver -
Chocolate phantoms - Brown & apricot
-
Red phantoms - red & apricot
-
Silver phantoms - silver & cream
The markings must occur on certain parts of the dogs' coat. Many refer to these markings as Dobie markings (short for Doberman), however this pattern also appears on Dachshunds, certain Spaniels, Yorkies, Manchester Terriers and certain Coonhounds. These markings must be:
-
Above each eye
-
On the sides of the muzzle
(also referred to as the side of the cheeks) -
Across the dog's chest
-
Down the legs
-
Under the tail
"Merle's" are again, very different than other Poodle colours. Also known as dapple,
Merle is characterized by irregular blotches of fur set on a lighter background of the
same pigment, such as solid black on gray (called blue merle) or solid brown on tan
(red merle). Blue and partially blue eyes are often seen with the merle pattern, as
well. One should never breed two Merle's together (we never do) as it can result
in birth defects.
We are located in Canada.
Under some circumstances we can ship, but ONLY WITHIN CANADA.
